I read One of Us Is Lying a month or two after it came out and every time I think about it, my heart does a little flutter. Maeve, along with Knox set out to find out who is behind the mysterious game while Phoebe tries to unravel the evade danger and unravel the secrets around her. By the time it comes to Knox, things are starting to become dangerous.Ī kid from school, Brandon, is killed doing a dare and things are getting serious. Phoebe is the first target and when she doesn’t take the dare, her deepest, darkest secret is revealed.Next comes Maeve, who skips the dare. Either you take a dare or a truth is revealed. And their weapon of choice is truth or dare. Now, there is a copycat but they mean business. I lost track of her.īut, in One of Us Is Next, we follow Maeve, Phoebe, and Knox. It’s been a year and a half since Simon died and in spite of the many copycat gossip apps, the Bayview four have moved on with their lives.Ĭooper is openly gay and happily in love with his boyfriend, Chris.īronwyn and Nick are together (most of the time).Īnd Addie is… I don’t even know. I mean… It’s been a few days since I finished this book and my mind is still reeling. I completely forgot how talented at writing Karen M. Families also can talk about the double standards applied to sexually active teens, where girls are reduced to being labeled sluts if they have sex or teases if they don’t, while boys who have sex are studs but those who don't are losers.Come on, Bayview, you know you’ve missed this. Other topics include a look at how no means no, even if a couple has been dating a while. The story offers an opportunity to discuss how much power teens should give to bullies and gossips. Teens make several questionable decisions, such as following a potentially dangerous person and holding back important information from parents and school officials. Most of the violent incidents aren't shown, but an attempted rape is described in detail. There's infrequent strong language, including 's-t,' 'f-k,' and 'a-hole.' Teens drink a little socially, one character develops a drinking problem, and there's no drug use. Dating is a big part of the plot, and characters kiss, make out, and are sexually active. Eighteen months after the events of the first book, Bayview High has an anonymous online bully challenging students to a high-profile and damaging game of Truth or Dare. McManus, and it deals with many of the same topics, including harmful secrets, bullying, dating, and cliques.
